Peristaltic Pump Lubricant

What is a peristaltic pump?
A peristaltic pump is a type of positive displacement pump used to eject various types of fluids. Also called a roller pump, it is named so because its mechanism of action is similar to that of peristalsis, or the serial contraction of the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. In this type, pumping and sealing action depends on the elasticity of its flexible parts.

What exactly is a positive displacement pump?
A positive displacement pump emits a certain liquid volume for every revolution of the motor. Peristaltic pump is one of its subtypes.

How does a peristaltic pump work?
Fluid is contained within a flexible tube fitted inside a circular pump casing. A fixed track, together with movable rollers, shoes, or wipers compress the external surface of flexible tube. The track is curved and the rollers or shoes rotate at an axis along the center of the radius of the curvature. The roller compresses the tubing and pushes the fluid towards the discharge end. The tubing likewise expands to its full shape and is filled with more fluid.

What are the advantages of using peristaltic pumps?
Peristaltic pumps are self-priming, do not require seals and valves, and are reversible. Their low maintenance needs make them comparatively inexpensive. Above all, the fluid inside is in contact only with the tubing. No contamination occurs and it is easy to sterilize the interiors of the pump. Their design prevents backflow and siphoning, and they are able to handle slurry, viscous, shear-sensitive, and aggressive fluids. Because of their ease of use, they have been used in various chemical, medical, agricultural, and industrial applications.

What is a self-priming pump?
A self-priming pump allows fluid recharging or refilling under lift conditions. To prime a pump, liquid is added into the pump casing or in an accessory chamber to displace or evacuate entrained air into a discharge piping and create a liquid seal inside the casing. A self-priming pump develops a vacuum sufficient enough for atmospheric pressure to force liquid to flow through the suction pipe into the pump casing, without the need to prime manually. Only positive displacement pumps are self-priming and eliminate the need to use foot valves for manual priming.

Who manufactures peristaltic pumps?
Larger peristaltic pumps are manufactured by companies such as Watson-Marlow and smaller ones are made by companies like Stenner Pump.
